We’ve been joking for a month about celebrating the one-month anniversary of ROFLCon. In internet years (similar to dog years, except even more extreme), ROFLCon’s already an aging spinster! But we still kind of like her. In honor of this most special occasion, we wanted to pull together all the guest and team reflections on the conference that we could find. We’ve been calling them “postmortems,” but that’s kind of mean, right? I mean, she may be a spinster, but “dead” is such a strong word.

Without further ado, here are all the guest & team reflections I could find and fit into one post. If you feel yours is missing, go ahead and add it in the comments!

Every so often, the ROFLTeam hears about a production or a development that lets us know that this conference is really happening in a pretty perfect and wonderful moment in culture. One of the more fascinating trends that we’ve been thinking about and observing has been the gradual incorporation of Web 2.0 stuff and – more generally – new media into more traditional forms of media – see “Web Junk” on VH1, Slate’s “Did You See This?” blog, the really creepy CSI:NY episode about Second Life, things like that. The older world is beginning to see the legitimacy of user-generated content as culturally significant, which is totes exciting.

So if any of you (like many of us on the ROFLTeam) are fans of South Park – an incredibly traditional and classic television show – we hope you watched last week’s episode, “Canada on Strike.” There was a pretty epic fight among several of our favorite internet celebrities, including Tay Zonday, Tron Guy, and Sneezing Panda. We like to think that ROFLCon’s existence nudged this plotline into place. In any case, we really hope our conference turns out a little better than what eventually happens. Like, we don’t want a bloodbath.

(The following is an ill-advised break from paper-writing. Please forgive any incoherency!)

In the throes of my hardcore procrastination (Harvard has its finals period after break), I was examining everything ROFL and found that a member of our Facebook group had posted a link to his research paper about lulz.

Research paper. Explaining. Lulz.

This is really exciting to me because I must admit that 4chan’s mentality and culture were always a bit inexplicable to me. My old haunt on the internets was somewhat downstream of Something Awful and 4chan, so while I became familiar with the meme culture as it floated on by, I didn’t quite understand how it was generated and who the “cool kids” were that got to determine what was funny and what wasn’t.

And now, an insider’s detailed explanation! This paper is neither comprehensive nor academically rigorous, but it definitely does go a long way for those of us who understand the world that 4chan influences but not what exactly went on inside the black box. It’s like lurking moar but in a conveniently bite-sized package. I suggest you read it!

Man, a lot has happened today in the internet world!

POTW (on Yahoo) has posted a great entry and accompanying video about the most memorable videos of 2007. They offer some pretty solid commentary about the role of the internet in contemporary culture and the ostensible democratization of fame — solid work. Start gettin’ nostalgic about the past year on the web, and start gettin’ pumped for THE NET 2008.

Viacom is taking their biznass to the online world. They’re releasing Paramount’s clear Academy Award nominee “Jackass 2.5″ over the internet for free instead of on DVD or in theaters. I suppose if you’re going to release a movie over the web like that, the Jackass movies are the kinds that’ll do well. Tons of the most watched viral videos on YouTube or College Humor are just people acting like douchebags. It also enables them to build up a community around the movie — the movie will certainly attract attention to jackassworld.com, currently under construction, where users will be able to submit original content (WONDERFUL idea — haven’t they gotten sued enough?) and blogs and such. It’s certainly one of the first experiments of its kind, and I’m excited to see how other major studios react. If it’s successful, we might see a whole new mode of expression for big Hollywood, which could be really sweet. Or it could crowd out the ‘little guy’ viral video that we have come to love so much. That doesn’t sound so sweet.

Top news on Yahoo shows a video from 1967 that supposedly predicts online shopping and email. Apparently because it’s so accurate, people think it’s a hoax. But nope, I learned rather recently (from a class, no less!) that a pretty similar conception of the internet to what we actually have was first conceived way back about 40 years ago. Check out the Wikipedia entry on the ARPANET, for example. Take that, Al Gore.

As far as developments on our conference, we’ve been doing some pretty exciting stuff behind the scenes. More to come later as things develop. Vague, no? I promise it’ll be cool. Be sure to subscribe to our feed to get the latest.

Merriam Webster announced the word of the year today, and we’re sure it’ll thrill the online community. As the press release describes,

“This year’s winning word first became popular in competitive online gaming forums as part of what is known as l33t (“leet,” or “elite”) speak—an esoteric computer hacker language in which numbers and symbols are put together to look like letters.”

It would seem that ‘w00t’ is the 2007 word of the year.

The AP article on the choice is a bit more interesting. The president of Merriam Webster, John Morse, makes a fabulous comment about why it makes sense that w00t would be the word of the year: “It shows a really interesting thing that’s going on in language. It’s a term that’s arrived only because we’re now communicating electronically with each other.” True that, John. That’s one of the things that we hope to examine in the image macro (i.e. the Lol-whatever) panel: how the internet has changed communication and language. Here’s a question, though — w00t has been in the popular lexicon for a few years now, why now?

Also of note to techies: ‘facebook’ was #2. Not the website or the noun, like the verb: “I facebooked her, and she deleted her relationship status last night! What could it mean?!” Or, “I facebooked my professor and he has no friends :’(.” Or, the ever popular “I facebooked your mom last night.” This is not to be confused with “[de/un]friend,” “[un]tag,” “poke,” or “drunk post.” I think “facebooking” in this sense is more akin to facebook stalking, also an amorphous idea (my conception is that it involves looking at the profiles of people you don’t know so well to acquire information that you would not otherwise get). So say most of the entries on the Open Dictionary, anyway; I tend to agree.

Hey kids, how’s it going? Long time no see. If you’ve been following along, you’ll probably notice that I’ve been kind of absent from the blog lately and letting the rest of our superhuman Team talk about the stuff that the ROFLCon staff has been thinking about/trouble they’ve been getting into. We’ve been talking about some pretty cool meme based initiatives that we’ll be blogging about soon enough.

Meanwhile, I’ve been in the background — immersed in handling all the background logistics for this thing.

-
But good news is that registration will be up soon (like, in the next week or so). We’ve been working with the good folks over at the Berkman Center to get the final details settled before opening up officially.

Early bird pricing details, after the jump.

To everyone that’s pre-registered, congrats! We’re giving you an early bird majorly discounted registration price of $20. This will include everyone that’s notified our Gmail (roflcon@gmail.com), by midnight EST, this Sunday, December 9. After that, registration prices will be rising. So if you’re thinking about coming, totally worth hitting us up soon and taking advantage of that discount.

Also, after a hardcore planning meeting last week, ROFLCon has reshuffled the Team into a highly organized, meme-snorting, pwn-dealing machine to seriously deal with putting this thing together. (now reflected on our team page) At any rate, our weekly staff meeting’s going down tomorrow night, so updates will be a’comin! Watch this space!

We at ROFLCon HQ have been having a really interesting and, I think, fundamentally important discussion about the place of the internet meme not just in culture, but in history. I remember back to my high school days stumbling upon archives of crazy, nonsensical flash animations like Typewild and Weeee (or, Gonads and Strife) and being completely smitten. In a fit of nostalgia last night, I searched far and wide for my favorite ol’ flashes, finally finding a fairly complete archive.

What’s great and awful and sad about these animations, as Dean pointed out to me, was that they’re in .swf format and are pretty graphically unique (read: terrible yet charming). More importantly, though, is that while we can see them now, it’s unclear as to whether we will be able to in the future. How do we know our operating systems in the future will jive with .swf files?

And what about Youtube? These crucial viral videos that we all know and love exist, in many cases, only on the internet. Should we be making efforts to ensure that we preserve some of these things in a more permanent format? If we see that as an important mission and then do that, does the removal from the network change some aspect of the video, so that it loses something essential to whatever made it an important aspect of our culture? How, then, can we protect what’s out floating in cyberspace?

I think it goes without saying that we want future generations to know the importance of Soulja Boy or Numa Numa for this generation, but the question of how to do that is a real tricky one.

Okay, so I realize now that most of my blog posts like this are just raising questions and offering no real answers. Sorry if that’s annoying, but I’ll probably keep doing it, as I have many questions and few answers.

John Mayer, on Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s brainchild funnyordie.com, has released a parody of the now notorious 2 girls, 1 cup video. Out of respect for y’all I’m NOT linking to the 2 girls site, if you want to see it look it up yourself (which you shouldn’t, but damn it it’s like the worst car crash you’ve ever seen and you just can’t look away). You know you’ve made it as a viral video when celebrities are parodying you.

I think it’s so interesting that the internet allows for, or is encouraging, classic celebrities — i.e. those from Hollywood or the offline music world — to also form an online presence, after some of these viral videos and memes have become accidentally more famous among our generation. Part of Funnyordie’s niche in the internet world is that it bridges the gap between old school and new school celebrities. I mean, you can find videos on the site from Will Ferrell, Ana Gasteyer, Bill Murray, Danny DeVito, Willem Defoe, and others. Maybe this whole thing is some kind of adaptation to our increasingly internet-oriented world. Young Hollywood, at least, is starting to get it.

I mean, the Landlord video alone has something like <strike>40</strike> 50 million views and basically took no money and little effort to make (I’m presuming these facts; unless you think that asking a two year old to get her drink on takes any effort). Compare that to a film with a $50 million budget that grosses $150 million, and that takes maybe six months to a year to film; more time than that for pre- and post-production stuff like writing and editing. Not to mention promotion and marketing of the film. Side note: if anyone’s watched NBC in the past two months or so, you probably know more about Bee Movie and Jerry Seinfeld than you ever wanted to. Sometimes you know exactly how much a movie is going to suck by the lengths they go to to make sure you’ve heard of it. Same goes for License to Wed (sorry, John Krasinski, but it did suck).

But anyway — both are arguably different kinds of fame, but internet celebrity and Hollywood are starting to cross over like whoa. What’s going to happen to the big budget, highly promoted film if a video that takes two days and no cash to make generates more, though admittedly different, consumer interest? I think it’s ridiculous to say that Hollywood films are going to fall by the wayside because of the internet, but there’s something going on that I can’t quite put my finger on.

Consider another question: if you’re a marketer for a company that wants some product placement somewhere — I was just watching Pulp Fiction the other night, and in the famous OD scene, the Game of Life and Operation were on a table, which was hilarious and entirely appropriate — where are you going to put your product? Low-budget viral video or the next movie from the Brat Pack?

Comment if you have thoughts! We want some chatting on the blog going on.

As I sit here this Thanksgiving evening digesting my wonderful meal (in my house, we don’t do turkey; we do steak, and holy crap was it amazing), I, of course, am thinking about silly internet fads and why they even exist in the first place. Why are cats with bad grammar universally recognized? Why does the fact that Paris Hilton has one facial expression even matter to such an extent?

I recall some examples of trying to explain particular internet memes to friends of mine. I once tried to describe to a friend why a lolcat was funny and culturally important, but I couldn’t come up with any description that could do it justice (sidenote: it is even more difficult to describe a lolcat to your parents. Don’t even try.). Basically I told him, “It’s a picture of a cat doing something weird, and he has bad grammar and spells words wrong, too.” But that doesn’t seem funny at all. It seems utterly pointless, which most memes arguably are. But then why the vast importance in our culture, and why does everybody know about them?

I ask these “why” questions not rhetorically to try to set up some theory of my own, but to try to get some user or visitor opinions to figure out the answer. Certainly the idea of a widely shared consciousness and cultural propagation comes into play, as Richard Dawkins described thirty years ago, but why are the most widely known internet memes the ones that are the most completely ridiculous?

Two points of interest today on the ROFLCon front:

ONE: Dennis Pozniak, who ran the Bert Is Evil mirror that hosted the famous Osama-Bert image will be coming to ROFLCon! This is huge on many levels outside of the fact that it was such a formative meme. It’ll be awesome to get a discussion going between Dino, Dennis, and other creators of images that became wildly distributed through the web and into physical media.

Dennis himself is an awesome figure: he currently manages a small Hemp store in his town and the local photoblog SeeShare. It’ll be awesome to hear him talk about his experiences and his thoughts on how the whole incident fits into the emergence of internet culture in the late 1990s.

And, two, a miscellaneous thought, after the jump.

TWO: The team had an awesome awesome meeting this Wednesday, where we hashed out quite a bit of detail about where the event’s going and what we’re going to do with it. Kevin got to talking about some of his research on the Soulja Boy phenomenon, which, as a YouTube search will show, has spawned into this infinitely iterative thoughtvirus. He was describing how clusters of videos have created a huge number of mini-memes that cross-reference and evolve on their own in complex trees of media.

I think an interesting frame for thinking about how memes and internet culture have developed in the last decade or so is to think about how the trees in general have changed shape as a result of W2.0 innovations, etc.

It’s been remarked to me that memes are comparatively more obscure nowadays because of the sheer size of the population using the internet and the flexibility to manipulate media. And, to that end, older memes definitely seem more linear in their development. All Your Base or HampsterDance, for example, were comparatively less iterative than the LOLCat or Rick Rolling. When people added their own spin, it usually preserved the integrity of the image (“All Your Base” just being photoshopped into different places) and never was as self-referential.

Dunno — just a thought.

<3,

Tim

Wow kids, an awesome blast from the past today. I’m happy to announce that Dino Ignacio, the brilliant designer behind the absolutely virulent “Bert Is Evil” meme from 1998, has officially agreed to appear to speak about his experiences at ROFLCon!

Been doing some research about it lately — I think the whole incident’s actually a hugely interesting case study into the role that creators play in shaping the course of their meme, and how online culture sometimes extends beyond their control. I have to say — I’m pretty excited to hear what he’s got to say.

We’re also currently talking to Dennis Pozniak, who was the man behind the iteration of Bert Is Evil that posted the well-known Bin Laden-Bert photos that riled up the press for awhile. Word on the street is that he’s interested, but we’ll let you guys know about the yea or nay when we get it.

So Christina and I had breakfast with amazingly brilliant and inestimable Charlie Nesson on Thursday. We talked about a bunch of things, not least of which is Prof. Nesson’s current initiative to get the expansively envisioned Global Poker Strategy Thinking Society off the ground.

At any rate, we got to the subject of ROFLCon and I think we stumbled upon a pretty interesting way of thinking about what the event “is,” beyond a kind of menagerie of internet curiosities (which no doubt, is a hugely entertaining part of the project).

ROFLCon was conceived of in the wake of the incredibly compelling xkcd meetup a few weeks back. Essentially, what happened was that Randy, author of the webcomic, posted a set of coordinate and times in advance of his arrival in Cambridge to stage an entirely undefined event. On that time and day, literally hundreds of people showed up, pulling primarily from the Harvard-MIT corridor, but featuring an appreciable number of people from around the country and international locations.

In the best of ways, it was kind of a Benkleresque dream come true.

And, what’s perhaps even more interesting is that the social architecture of the park reflected all the various subgroups that gets associated with internet phenomena (and I guess spectacle in general). There was:

1) A Hard Core (or, as Christina called them “The United Nations of Nerd”) of people who were genuinely interested and enthusiastic about the task at hand. This is everyone who was there to meet other fans, participate in events that were discussed in the comic, etc etc. Whether its Tron Guy or PostSecret, there’s always an analogous social structure in internet phenomena that forms a firm fandom base for all of the internet’s iterative culture creation to emerge.

2) A Soft Shell of people who were aware of and liked the comic, but were mostly there to sit back and enjoy/mock the really hardcore group of kids that were there. They stayed for most of the afternoon and were actually physically defined by where they stood in the park. Most of the hardcore fans piled up on a jungle gym that was at the very coordinate point specified in the webcomic. Members of this group formed a wide but clearly defined, distanced ring around them on the fences around the playset. Most didn’t participate in any of the events going around and instead were there to gawk.

3) A Wide Pool of loosely connected people that were coming in and out all afternoon of the meetup. They were either a) just passing through, hoping to visit the park, b) a friend of a friend who likes the comic, c) someone who just “heard that something was happening.” There’s a bunch of these people online in every internet phenomena, who get involved in memes because it popped up on Reddit or Digg or someone sent it to them in an office e-mail forward or something.

So, in retrospect, what did Randy do? He manifested the entire social pattern of the internet in physical form.

In some ways, I think that’s pretty spooky and awesome at the same time. It’s interesting because it violates traditional expectations about what the social impact of the internet is. (As a communication interface reflecting existing social structures, rather than as a social platform that might appear in a localized way)

So I think that’s a good thing to shoot for ROFLCon. What we want to do isn’t just to bring web celebrities to Harvard and have academics look them over like some show-and-tell, but to manifest the complex social framework of the internet as well through the people that come to see the event.

In short, we kind of want to put the entire internet (or at least some facsimile of it) into a lecture hall somewhere in Cambridge. After that, who knows? We’ll see how it goes.

So I call the number previously held by Deidre LaCarte, inventor of perhaps one of the internet’s most formative memes.

A tired sounding girl picks up the phone, and awkward conversation ensues. Turns out it isn’t her. Turns out she doesn’t know anyone by that name. Turns out she was sleeping.

Ah well, what are you going to do? I mean, that number is about 8 years old now.

Or, I was thinking, maybe it WAS her on the other end of the line. I guess what’s kind of interesting about memes is that some of them pretty much don’t want to be found. This might make things difficult.

But on the off chance that ain’t the case, I’m going to slam those three numbers we found in the phonebook tomorrow, wish me luck.

Hmm…so it looks like we’re in a waiting game with Deidre LaCarte. Called the number yesterday and turns out someone else is living there now, and I’ve forwarded the message out to Abatis. The Canadian telephone directory lists three numbers for “LeCarte, D”’s, so I may eventually just resort to going down and pinging them all. With any hope, the Mother of the Mother of Modern Internet Memes will pick up on the other end of the line. Any other ideas are super welcome.

Nabbed some pretty cool suggestions from the early days of the internets at Grendel’s on Sunday, including some people who were Kind Of A Big Deal on Usenet. In the very least, we sure as hell need to get Canter and Siegel, the first large-scale spammers. I’ll update the list as we get the names of them all.

More news, after the jump

*Invitation e-mails went out to all the new additions to the list yesterday. We’ll see what the response looks like. The only straggler is “Will It Blend,” whose website is now dead for some reason or another. Blaaargh. Still, it’d be awesome to have them show up with one of those badass blenders.

*Also — if you know any profs that might be interested in speaking, let me know. I’m compiling a secondary list to start hitting up in a week or two.

So, turns out my previous post was, in fact, slightly inaccurate. It looks like there’s at least some precedent for an internet meme conference. LULZCon, held not a few months ago in Chicago by the (in?)famous kids over at Encylopedia Dramatica and Something Awful. Though, judging from their “shedule,” it looks like the general thing was focused on being part of internet culture, as opposed to actually looking into creators (intentional or otherwise) of meme culture. (a la, the awesome Internet Meme Costume Contest)

I dunno, I’m still kind of debating with myself on how to cast this, but we’re definitely taking the latter tack. I guess the remaining question is that there’s obviously the really intriguing side of getting people to come down physically and speak, but I’m still unsure on whether or not it kills the mood to have some solidly awesome academic folks come and speak too. (like, come on, if we could get him, I think Weinberger would rock this)

In other news: The guest list is complete, topping out a hundred and with additional sub-appendixes for other stuff that didn’t technically fit into the criterion for the guest list. Check it out. We’ll start rolling on this later in the week.

It occurs to me there’s two reactions here that’ll be interesting to see once we get this ridiculousness together.

One, of course, is how the guests reflect on their experience as celebrities. I think internet fame’s pretty interesting in that most people don’t get known for who they are, but what they’ve produced. That’s why discussions about welebrities always end up referring to people as “so-and-so guy.” (Star Wars Kid, Chocolate Rain Guy, etc etc) But ROFLCon’s approach will be basically to look at them directly. It’ll be fun to see what they have to say now that the weird anonymity feature of online fame gets stripped away.

But, the other side, I’m really pretty enthused to see how the audience reacts. I mean, part of the reason that internet memes can be taken so lightly is that there’s always the presumption that you’ll never actually have to meet the person that you’re laughing at. (i.e. the First Goatse Reaction flickr pool) What happens when Peter Pan Guy is telling you about his life after internet fame and you later run into him at the conference mixer later on? Good times.

In other news: Awesomely, it turns out Allie has a connection to Joe Mathlete of the amazingly beautiful Joe Mathlete Explains Today’s Marmaduke. So, we’re seeing if we can work something out for the spring. I think he’d work great alongside Maddox and other curmudgeons of that ilk.

But the effort to compile the ROFLCon guest list continues apace! We’re up to ninety and running thanks to generous help from Cat, Xtina, and Mako. Keep ‘em coming folks.
